BSNL’s self care portal for it’s customers in J&K seemed like yet another web based application where one could generate duplicate bills for land line and take their print outs for payment at the cash counters. But hold back! It’s not only this but much much more than that. BSNL has made a far away dream of a techie come true wherein applying for a new phone connection of changing your broad brand plan or applying for a new broad band plan is only a click away!! Impossible ? but true. BSNL has done just that with their Self Care Portal service which has now been extended to the users in Kashmir.
Even though I had to follow up with constant phone calls to 1500 and 1504 to get my Customer ID (this is the new ID for customers which can enable them to use the Portal Services), it was worth all the efforts. Now you won’t have to go through all this as now the new bills generated would carry the customer ID of the subscribers on the bill itself.
Here’s a glimpse of what I was able to accomplish and the minor hurdles faced to get things going.
I registered at the Portal (http://selfcare.ndc.bsnl.co.in) on January 07, 2011. I am a subscriber at Srinagar. I applied for a Land Line connection with broadband on 8th Jan and the installation address I required was at Jammu. On 21st Feb, 2011 my connection got working and broadband activation as per BSNL would take another 2 days, cool! The line man who came to install the Phone, however was not aware that he had to collect the signed copy of the application form(of the Print out) along with identity and address proof. These documents I submitted to the office of the Commercial Officer, Jammu. Even though this installation took time, over more than a month, but I guess this delay was due to the system being implemented and the natural delays that happen for the employees to get accustomed to the adoption of new technology.
On 19th Feb, 2011 I applied for another connection at Srinagar and on 21st Feb the line man was there at the installation premises to install the phone! I was also able to change the Broad band plan on one of my phone connections and it was changed with a little bit of rigorous follow up though!
The portal is itself a bit slow and sometimes hangs up due to load, but as BSNL is growing gradually to bring high tech services for it’s customers in J&K, it’s worth the while to bear with slow portal speeds for the sake of lighting fast service speeds. Great going BSNL, it seems very soon online payment options for Land Line Bills will also be available on their payments portal at:http://portal.bsnl.in/ , where one can register and pay post paid Mobile Bills (including J&K). One can register a Srinagar Land Line but cannot pay as yet. But it seems very soon this facility will also be available.
